Initial Documentation Preparation
To register a car in Poland, you must start by collecting essential documents. These include proof of ownership (such as a purchase invoice or sales agreement), a valid identification document, proof of vehicle insurance, and the vehicle’s technical inspection certificate. If the car was imported from another country, customs clearance documents and proof of tax payment are also necessary. Ensure that all documents are correctly translated into Polish if required.

Visit to Local Registration Office
Once you have the necessary paperwork, visit the local Starostwo Powiatowe or Urząd Miasta based on your place of residence. At the office, fill out the vehicle registration form, submit the documents, and pay the applicable fees. The staff will verify your paperwork, assign registration plates, and issue a temporary registration certificate valid for 30 days.

Permanent Registration Certificate
Within a few weeks, your permanent register car in poland card, known as dowód rejestracyjny, will be issued. It must be collected from the same office or may be mailed. Along with it, you receive the vehicle card (karta pojazdu) and proof of registration plate ownership. Always keep these documents in the vehicle during use.

Additional Obligations for Foreign Vehicles
If you are registering a car imported from outside Poland, an environmental tax and excise duty may apply. You will also need a certified translation of the vehicle documents and proof of conformity to EU standards. Non-EU vehicles may require more in-depth technical inspections.

Costs and Processing Time
The average registration cost ranges from 180 to 250 PLN depending on whether it’s a new, used, or imported vehicle. The process generally takes two to three weeks. Ensuring complete and accurate documentation helps avoid delays and extra visits to the registration office.
